Mary grew up in a household where her mother and grandmother were makers. Over the past few decades, she has developed a textile obsession that includes creating wearable art, art quilts, dyeing fabric, along with mixed media. Mary’s award-winning work has been juried into national competitions. She is a member of studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) and Surface Design Association (SDA).
In my fiber art, I endeavor to create moods with color and texture that soothe or stimulate. A continuing theme in my work is a fascination with the sea. The oceans ability to engage all of the senses and instill calm and exhilaration simultaneously, is a never-ending source of solace. Dyeing silk fabric in a palette of ocean colors and manipulating the surface replicate the overlapping ripples and waves in a body of water. I grew up in a home of makers, and over the years I have indulged in an obsession with fiber. Creating wearable art, art quilts, dyeing fabric and mixed media brings me joy, and I am grateful that I found my passion. The therapeutic aspect of creating alleviates stress and it is a definitive factor in healing after major health issues. I use techniques such as fabric manipulation, hand-dyeing, surface design and quilting. My work has been described as colorful, funky, and vibrant and my style has evolved into a body of work easily recognized as my own.
